Born in Toronto on March 1, 1905 and educated at Ridley College in St. Catharines, Harry “Red” Foster founded his highly successful Foster Advertising Agency in 1944. He actually began his career as a sports announcer covering wrestling matches, football, speedboat, and lacrosse events coast-to-coast. He introduced Canadians to the first outdoor radio theatre in the country at the Canadian National Exhibition, and was rated as the second best speedboat driver in the world.
In addition to being involved on numerous business interests and having received countless accolades from his peers, Foster was probably best known in his interest in, and support of, the mentally retarded through the Harry E. Foster Charitable Foundation and the Special Olympics for the mentally handicapped. As a youngster, Foster had grown up with a mentally handicapped brother, Jack. The boys’ mother spent much of her waking hours attending to the needs of Jack. His mother’s dedication so impressed young Harry, that as he grew older, he too dedicated himself to assist with the welfare of Canada’s mentally handicapped. Harry “Red” Foster died on January 8, 1985.
